Unpredictable Instrument 1 is an application designed in Max/MSP. It was inspired, perhaps prodded along, by the increasing complexity of electronic musical interfaces, and the emphasis placed on total control on the part of the musician. Here, the performer is given one UI control — and on and off button — and an array of mysterious lights that blink unpredictably (or do they?). The mechanism that influences the production of sound is totally hidden from the user and it’s results are somewhat unpredictable, even knowing how it works (hint: you have to have your computers microphone turned on for it to work).
